Moldova to withdraw from CIS Interparliamentary Assembly in 2024

Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko has said that Moldova will withdraw from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly (IPA) on February 8, 2024.

“This will be a big loss for Chisinau,” she said, according to Interfax.

“After Moldova announces withdrawal from the IPA, the procedure will end on February 8, 2024. Moldova will not be a member of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly officially from February 8. There is no harm to our Assembly. The Assembly continues working. Of course, this is a huge loss for Moldova itself,” Matvienko said.

She noted that the CIS is the Commonwealth of Independent States, while Moldova since President Maia Sandu came to power, is no longer an independent country, it is under external control and acts upon other country’s instructions.

Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu said in February 2023 that Moldova was withdrawing from several dozen agreements within the CIS.
