Snowfall in Europe leads to the cancellation of hundreds of flights

04 December 2023 09:12

Several European countries experienced heavy snowfall over the weekend, which led to transport collapses and power outages.

In southern Germany, disruptions in air and rail services have been observed for the second day. Munich's airport was disrupted and 560 of 880 scheduled flights were cancelled on December 3, RBC reports.

There were also disruptions at Frankfurt am Main Airport.

Deutsche Bahn, the railway operator, warned that transportation would remain difficult on December 4, Bloomberg reports.

At the largest airport in the Netherlands, Schiphol (located near Amsterdam), dozens of flights were also cancelled on December 3; according to Reuters, there were about 150 of them (both arrivals and departures).

Also, due to the snowfall, problems were observed at the Swiss Zurich airport; more than 40 flights were cancelled there on Saturday, and many were delayed. In Switzerland, as in other countries, there were problems with railway transport. RTS reports that more than 50 cm of snow fell in some places in the country's mountains.
