Kremlin spox: EU ridicules Orban over Moscow visit

26 July 2024 15:51

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that EU countries are "mocking" Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his recent visit to Russia.

"For this trip to Moscow, the whole EU is now just mocking him. The situation (in the EU) is creepy," Peskov stated, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Peskov also expressed that current attempts at dialogue with the West are futile. He noted that it is pointless to try to convey the Russian position to the West due to widespread animosity towards Russia. Peskov concluded that time is needed before constructive dialogue can resume.

During his trip dubbed as "peace mission", Orban visited Kyiv on July 2, where he had talks with Zelenskyy; three days later, he met with Putin in Moscow.

His meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow drew criticism from several European Union member states and EU officials. The visit was seen as problematic because it occurred at a time when the EU has maintained a policy of sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Russia, particularly in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine and other geopolitical concerns.
