Media: US informs Iran of readiness to return to nuclear deal

26 July 2024 16:29

The Biden administration has communicated its readiness to swiftly rejoin the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The news comes from a source within Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, revealing that the US extended this offer to Iranian authorities on July 23, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The source indicated that Washington is prepared to negotiate a rapid return to the JCPOA, contingent upon minor amendments to the existing agreement. This signal from the US administration marks a notable development in the ongoing discussions surrounding the nuclear deal, which has been a contentious issue since the U.S. withdrew from it in 2018 under the Trump administration.

The potential re-entry into the JCPOA reflects a significant shift in US policy and underscores President Joe Biden's administration's commitment to diplomatic engagement and multilateral agreements. The JCPOA, originally signed in 2015, aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, the deal has faced numerous challenges and setbacks, particularly following the U.S. exit and the subsequent re-imposition of sanctions.

The reported offer from Washington signals a potential breakthrough in negotiations, as both sides have grappled with complex issues and diverging interests. The Iranian government will now weigh the proposed terms and decide on its course of action in response to the US overture.
