Australia expands sanctions on Iran
Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced that Australia expanded sanctions against Iran, citing human rights violations, with five Iranian nationals added to the blacklist.
"Marking the second anniversary of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, the Australian government is imposing targeted economic sanctions and travel bans on five additional Iranian citizens. Those affected by today's restrictive measures include senior members of the security and law enforcement services," Wong stated, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The minister also noted that Australia has imposed targeted sanctions on a total of 195 Iranian individuals and entities. "These measures reflect our commitment to holding Iran accountable for its human rights violations," she emphasised.
Thus, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was detained by the police for improperly wearing her hijab in September 2022. During questioning, she reportedly suffered a heart attack, which led to her death. However, information circulated on social media claiming that Amini had been beaten by the police officers. On October 7, the Iranian National Forensic Medicine Organisation released an official report on the cause of her death, stating that she had not sustained any injuries.
