Elon Musk warns of demographic decline in Europe

01 August 2026 15:24

American entrepreneur Elon Musk has warned of a growing demographic crisis in Europe, arguing that declining birth rates could lead to long-term population decline across much of the Western world.

In a series of posts on X, Musk pointed to demographic data indicating that deaths now outnumber births in most European Union member states, Caliber.Az reports.

“21 out of 27 EU countries have more deaths than births,” Musk wrote.

In a separate post, he added: “They are far along the road to extinction.”

Musk was commenting on United Nations fertility statistics covering several of the world's largest economies, including the United Kingdom, South Korea, France, Germany, the United States and Japan.

The data show a long-term decline in birth rates dating back to 1950, reflecting demographic trends that have prompted growing concern among policymakers and economists over ageing populations, shrinking workforces and their potential impact on future economic growth.
