Bloomberg: US, China agree on joint action against Russia's war on Ukraine
The summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart Donald Trump was a breakthrough in bilateral relationship where the Asian giant was treated as an “equal partner” of the US, according to David Daokui Li, a regular policy adviser to Beijing.
“Among all the meetings between the two leaders, this one is perhaps the most important — really historical,” Li said, per Bloomberg.
Li added: “Fundamentally the most important progress for both sides is for the US to recognize China as equal partner to talk about things.”
Following the summit, the two leaders agreed to “work together” to “get the war with Russia and Ukraine solved,” according to Trump. Although the details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed, experts believe that China’s involvement could significantly influence the diplomatic context of the war.
The meeting also concluded with the announcement of a one-year trade truce and agreements on tariffs and the export control of critical minerals. However, analysts note that the main intrigue lies in China’s potential engagement in security issues, particularly concerning Ukraine.
In Beijing, Li noted, there is “visible enthusiasm” following the summit, and a recent post by Xi’s chief of staff, Cai Qi, mentioning “proactive management of the international space,” reflects China’s growing confidence in its global role.
At the same time, the United States continues signaling its intention to reduce dependence on China in strategic sectors and to strengthen alliances amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
