Spain records 327 heat-related deaths during record June heatwave
Spain has reported 327 heat-related deaths since Sunday as the country endured an unprecedented June heatwave, while Europe continues to experience exceptionally high temperatures expected to persist for another two weeks.
According to the Carlos III Health Institute, 327 people have died from heat-related causes since 21 June, Caliber.Az reports, citing Euronews.
The country experienced record-breaking temperatures throughout June, with numerous national and regional temperature records falling during the extreme weather.
Spain's national meteorological agency (AEMET) announced that the heatwave officially ended on Thursday.
Historical weather data dating back to 1950 show that 23 June was the hottest June day ever recorded in Spain, while 22 June ranked as the second hottest.
Northern Spain experienced some of the most extreme conditions, with Bilbao Airport recording new highs for both daytime temperatures and overnight minimum temperatures.
Since the country's annual heat monitoring season began in mid-May, the Carlos III Health Institute has attributed a total of 611 deaths to extreme heat.
