Poland reaffirms interest in NATO nuclear-sharing program

28 August 2026 11:47

Poland remains interested in participating in NATO’s nuclear-sharing program and is also negotiating a possible role in a European nuclear deterrence framework proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Friday, August 28.

“To dispel any doubts: Poland, as before, is interested in participating in NATO’s nuclear-sharing program. We are also negotiating the proposal to participate in the European nuclear protection ‘umbrella.’ Our government’s position on these issues is unequivocal,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X, according to Caliber.Az.

His remarks followed comments by Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski, who said Poland did not want allied nuclear warheads to be stationed on Polish territory.

Zalewski made the statement after meeting U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby.

The two statements indicate that Warsaw distinguishes between participating in broader nuclear deterrence arrangements and hosting allied nuclear warheads on its territory. Kosiniak-Kamysz nevertheless stressed that the government’s position on Poland’s potential involvement in both NATO’s nuclear-sharing arrangements and Macron’s proposed European “nuclear umbrella” remains clear.
