EU Commission preparing sweeping reform of enlargement policy

The European Commission is preparing a major reform of the European Union’s enlargement policy, with proposals expected to be presented to EU member states and the European Parliament at the end of September, Bloomberg reports.

The proposed reform would include changes to the reforms required of countries seeking EU membership, as well as a shift from unanimity to qualified majority voting for certain decisions related to the enlargement process.

The changes are intended to reduce the risk of individual member states blocking decisions on the admission of new countries.
