Canada cuts nearly all communication channels with Russia
The Russian embassy in Canada has announced that Canada severed almost all communication channels with Russia.
"The Canadian side has voluntarily terminated all bilateral communication channels, except for diplomatic ones, to the detriment of its own interests and citizens. In a surge of blanket Russophobia to please the Ukrainian nationalist community, which significantly influences the re-election of a large portion of the ruling class, and to curry favor with senior figures in Washington, Canada has dismantled decades of accumulated ties and everything that once united the peoples of our countries," the Russian embassy said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
The Russian embassy in Ottawa also noted the deterioration in the Canadian leadership's approach toward Russia.
"During the height of the Cold War, Pierre Trudeau, the father of the current prime minister, regularly visited our ambassador's residence to strengthen and develop dialogue, recognising the benefits of bilateral relations between Ottawa and Moscow. But Canada is no longer the same," the Russian embassy added.
After the state coup in Ukraine in 2014, Canada began significantly limiting communication with Russia. By 2020, Ottawa had imposed sanctions on Moscow 19 times, severed military ties, and suspended the activity of the Russia-Canada Intergovernmental Economic Commission, which was established in 1995. Following the beginning of the Special Military Operation, Canada introduced an unprecedented number of restrictions against Russia. To date, the sanctions list has been expanded over 60 times.
