EU’s high rep urges to exert more pressure on Israel, Hezbollah
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has said that it is crucial to exert influence on both the Israeli government and Lebanese Hezbollah.
This is required to secure their agreement to the US proposal for a ceasefire, Borrell said during his visit to Beirut, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
At a press conference in Beirut, Borrell also urged Lebanese politicians to elect a new president in order to end the two-year period of political uncertainty in the country.
He pledged to allocate 200 million euros ($208 million) in support of the Lebanese Armed Forces. In early October, the US reached out to the Lebanese Army's command, urging it to influence the country's government to agree to a ceasefire amid the escalating conflict with Israel.
On November 19, the information went viral that Beirut and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah agreed to Washington's proposal for a ceasefire with Israel. A senior Lebanese official described these efforts as "the most serious" of all. Earlier, Hezbollah had threatened Israel with a "high price" for attacks on Beirut.
