Former vice president boos Trump's сabinet member at Switzerland dinner
Former Vice President Al Gore became the centre of attention at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after reportedly booing US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during a tense dinner event on January 20.
Lutnick, who was delivering combative remarks about the global energy landscape, particularly advocating for coal over renewable energy, faced a backlash from many attendees in the room, including Gore, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Sources say that Lutnick’s dismissive comments about Europe and his defence of coal as a vital energy source were met with “widespread jeering,” prompting BlackRock CEO Larry Fink to intervene and urge the crowd to calm down. According to multiple witnesses, the atmosphere quickly became "noisy and spicy," with some describing the evening as “tense.”
As Lutnick continued to make his case, Gore—an outspoken advocate for climate action—could be heard booing the Commerce Secretary’s remarks. The incident reportedly drew attention and marked a stark contrast between Gore’s climate advocacy and the Trump administration’s stance on energy policies.
The US Department of Commerce, however, downplayed the incident, stating, “Only one person booed, and it was Al Gore.”
Energy Secretary Chris Wright reportedly took the floor, shouting “How dare you disrespect Secretary Lutnick? You don’t know you’re getting in trouble!” His remarks were met with further unrest as a German manager in the audience also began shouting at Wright.
As tensions simmered in the room, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, among others, reportedly left the dinner early, adding to the dramatic scene unfolding at the prestigious annual forum.
