POLITICO: EU leaders push Trump to send troops to Ukraine
European leaders spent considerable time attempting to convince US President Donald Trump to send American forces to Ukraine to ensure security in the event of a peace agreement.
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer were among the leaders actively discussing the issue, POLITICO reports
They urged Trump and his team that the only way to prevent further Russian attacks was to provide Kyiv with US security guarantees through military support, arguing that an American presence could serve as a reliable protection for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
However, despite these efforts, European diplomats privately expressed doubts about the practical value of such guarantees, citing the Trump administration’s reputation as an “unreliable ally” for Europe.
Throughout 2025, Trump repeatedly stated that the US would not deploy troops to Ukraine as part of providing security assurances.
Diplomats and officials now worry that the erosion of personal trust between European leaders and Trump could have serious consequences.
