Talks with Israel aimed at preventing new war, says Lebanese president

02 September 2026 16:27

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said the main goal of the ongoing talks with Israel is to prevent another war while preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability, Al Hadath reports.

According to Aoun, Beirut is ready to consider any option or path that could help avert a war.

He noted that Lebanon currently faces numerous opportunities that should not be missed for the sake of “narrow calculations.”

The current diplomatic track follows a series of ceasefire arrangements and renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, with Washington seeking to turn the cessation of hostilities into a broader security framework.

In June 2026, the US brokered a framework tying Israel’s eventual withdrawal from southern Lebanon to efforts by Beirut to disarm Hezbollah, a process the group has rejected.

In August 2026, Washington launched another round of Israel-Lebanon negotiations in Rome, seeking lasting security arrangements and greater Lebanese government control in the south.

The process remains fragile, however, as Israel has continued to maintain positions in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah has opposed disarmament without an Israeli withdrawal.
