EU receives Ukraine's request for billions in air defence funding

02 September 2026 16:26

The European Union has received a multi-billion-euro funding request from Ukraine that includes U.S.-made Patriot missile interceptors, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on September 2.

"I can confirm that we have received a new payment request worth several billion euros and would cover Ukraine's air defences, including the PAC-3 air defence system," von der Leyen told reporters in Brussels during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Caliber.Az reports.

The PAC-3 interceptor is designed to counter ballistic missile threats and has played a key role in Ukraine's efforts to protect its cities and critical infrastructure from Russian missile attacks. However, a global shortage of Patriot interceptors has complicated efforts to strengthen Ukraine's air defences.

"Member states are currently looking at Ukraine's request, but I can say it is going in the right direction," von der Leyen said.

The request comes as Ukraine continues to seek additional air defence capabilities amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks. Securing more Patriot interceptors has become a priority for Kyiv because of their ability to engage some of the most advanced missiles used against Ukrainian targets.

During their joint appearance, von der Leyen and Rutte also discussed Germany's accusations against Russia over the incident in Leipzig. Both officials expressed support for Germany and indicated that the EU and its partners were prepared to respond with additional sanctions against Russia and further military assistance for Ukraine.
