German defence chief calls for proceedings to ban AfD

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has called for proceedings to be launched to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD), saying its radical wing poses a threat to the country’s constitutional order.

His comments came days before elections on September 6 in Saxony-Anhalt, where opinion polls suggest the AfD could win a majority of seats and form the regional government alone, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Pistorius accused the party’s nationalist wing of seeking to establish an ethnically homogeneous Germany.

He said it was “naive to believe that extremists can be dealt with through political debate alone”.

The AfD has been described as having a radical wing, which has faced scrutiny over its political positions and activities.
