Spain rejects US-backed Gaza Board of Peace, citing UN framework concerns
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on January 22 that Spain would not participate in the proposed Board of Peace for Gaza promoted by US President Donald Trump, arguing that the initiative falls outside the framework of the United Nations.
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels following an extraordinary meeting of European Union leaders that discussed Trump’s remarks on Greenland, Sánchez explained that Spain could not support the initiative because it was not anchored in the UN system and did not include the Palestinian National Authority, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The proposal, presented by Trump earlier the same day at the World Economic Forum in Davos, was initially intended to oversee his peace plan for Gaza and has since been expanded to address other global conflicts.
In a statement released by the Spanish government, Sánchez said the decision reflected Spain’s commitment to multilateralism, international law and the UN-led international order.
He stressed that the future of Palestine must be determined by the Palestinian people themselves and that any peaceful and secure coexistence with Israel must be decided through dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, within a process aimed at implementing a two-state solution.
