China and India agree to continue talks on border dispute

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks in Beijing on the countries’ long-standing border dispute and bilateral relations, with both sides agreeing to continue negotiations toward a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement.”

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the next round of talks on the boundary issue will be held in India in 2027.

During the meeting, Wang stressed that China-India relations are important not only for the two countries but also have broader global and strategic significance. He called on Beijing and New Delhi to strengthen communication, manage differences and expand cooperation.

The Indian Embassy in China confirmed that the two officials discussed bilateral relations, ways to expand cooperation, and efforts to maintain peace and stability in border areas, Reuters reports.

China and India, the world’s two most populous countries and nuclear-armed powers, share a roughly 3,800-kilometre-long disputed border in the Himalayas. Much of the boundary remains undemarcated, leading to recurring tensions and clashes.

A deadly confrontation in 2020 resulted in casualties on both sides and triggered a prolonged military standoff along the border. In October 2024, Beijing and New Delhi reached an agreement on steps toward resolving some of the border tensions.

Relations between the two countries have gradually improved in recent years. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China last year for the first time in seven years. Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi in September, according to sources cited by Reuters.
