Bulgaria introduces tougher anti-corruption checks for officials

Bulgaria’s Parliament has approved legislation introducing mandatory anti-corruption testing for public officials, the legislative body said.

The law was adopted during an extraordinary parliamentary session in second and final reading, paving the way for integrity checks for officials appointed to positions deemed vulnerable to corruption.

Under the new rules, officials appointed to such positions will be required to successfully complete an “integrity test” within one month of taking office.

Test results will remain valid for three years from the date the assessment is completed.

Officials who fail the test will not be able to retake it immediately and will have to wait one year before attempting the assessment again.

The measure is intended to strengthen integrity safeguards and address corruption risks within Bulgaria’s public administration.
