Romania leads Europe in fuel price surge

Romania recorded the steepest increase in fuel and lubricant prices among all European Union member states, Eurostat confirmed.

Fuel and lubricant prices in Romania rose by 24.2% in July 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier, marking the largest annual increase across the bloc.

Germany and Lithuania followed, with prices in both countries rising by 22.9% year on year. In Bulgaria, fuel and lubricant prices increased by 22.2%.

The Netherlands recorded a 22% increase, while prices in Finland rose by 20.5% over the same period.

The most modest increases were reported in Sweden, where fuel prices rose by just 1.2%, and Ireland, where they increased by 3.2%.

Hungary was the only EU country cited where fuel and lubricant prices declined, falling by 0.1% compared with July 2025.
