Britain deploys Typhoon fighters to Qatar
The UK has deployed Typhoon fighter jets to Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the UK Ministry of Defence said on January 23, as tensions rise in the Middle East over Iran.
“RAF Typhoon jets have deployed to Qatar in a defensive capacity. The UK and Qatar have been close defence partners for decades,” the Ministry said on X.
"This deployment builds on that relationship, supporting regional stability and keeping us secure at home and strong abroad."
As of January 15, the United States and the United Kingdom have started withdrawing some military personnel from Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar amid rising tensions over Iran’s crackdown on anti-government protests. US officials describe the partial withdrawal as a "precautionary measure," and the UK is reportedly removing some staff.
The move comes after Iran closed its airspace temporarily, prompting airlines such as Air India and Lufthansa to reroute flights. Both the British and US embassies in the region have advised staff to exercise caution, and several countries, including Italy, Poland, and Germany, have urged citizens to leave Iran or avoid its airspace.
The unrest in Iran, sparked by economic collapse and rising living costs, has escalated since late December. Human rights groups report over 2,400 protesters killed, more than 18,400 arrested, and evidence of mass unlawful killings.
US President Donald Trump has warned of “very strong action” if executions of protesters proceed, while Iran’s leadership has promised retaliation against any attack. Analysts note that while some personnel are leaving Al-Udeid, there is no indication of a large-scale evacuation.
Qatar emphasises it is taking measures to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure amid regional tensions.
