“100% false”: Hegseth shuts door on 2028 presidential bid

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has denied a report that he discussed the possibility of running for president in the 2028 US election, calling the claim “100% false”.

NBC News earlier reported, citing sources, that Hegseth had discussed with people close to him the possibility of launching a presidential campaign in 2028.

Hegseth rejected the report in a post on X, saying:

“100% false. We told NBC that, but they just lie w/ anonymous ‘sources.’ My only job: Make @DeptofWar Great Again. Carry on Patriots, and enjoy your Friday night.”

Hegseth said his focus remained on his role leading the Pentagon.
