Japan turns to Ukraine’s drone-war lessons for new low-cost interceptor
Japan is moving to mass-produce the Terra B1 interceptor drone, which was developed with lessons from the war in Ukraine after the Japanese-made system became the only candidate to successfully complete a fast-track military demonstration aimed at finding a low-cost response to mass drone attacks.
Terra Drone announced on August 25 that Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency had selected the Terra B1 for procurement following a competition that attracted proposals from 38 companies, as reported by Ukraine's Defence Express.
The decision moves the interceptor from testing toward procurement and mass production at an unusually rapid pace. Japan launched the program only in June, with the first Terra B1 deliveries expected as early as September.
The Terra B1 has been designed specifically to counter long-range, relatively inexpensive attack drones such as the Iranian-designed Shahed family, which has transformed air-defence calculations during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
According to Defence Express, Japan’s interest in the technology is closely linked to lessons emerging from the Ukrainian battlefield, where interceptor drones have increasingly provided a cheaper alternative to firing expensive surface-to-air missiles at large waves of low-cost Russian UAVs.
The approach reflects a growing recognition among militaries that using conventional air-defence missiles against inexpensive drones can quickly become economically unsustainable when attacks involve large numbers of targets. Relatively cheap interceptor drones could instead allow defenders to preserve more expensive missile systems for higher-value threats.
Earlier this year, Terra Drone partnered with Ukrainian defence company Amazing Drones on the Terra A1 interceptor. The system subsequently entered operational deployment in Ukraine and successfully intercepted a Shahed-type long-range drone under real combat conditions.
The closely related Terra A1 offers an indication of the capabilities being developed by Terra Drone. The electrically powered interceptor has a maximum speed of about 300 kilometers per hour, an operational range of up to 32 kilometers and an endurance of approximately 15 minutes.
The system was designed around rapid launches and relatively inexpensive mass deployment, enabling defenders to engage incoming drones without expending far more costly conventional air-defence missiles.
The Terra A1 was jointly developed by Terra Drone and Amazing Drones, while another Ukrainian company, WinnyLab, has worked with Terra Drone on the longer-range fixed-wing Terra A2 interceptor.
Japan’s rapid move from launching the program to selecting a system for procurement highlights how the proliferation of mass drone warfare is prompting countries to rethink traditional air-defence models, with Ukraine providing a real-world testing ground for technologies designed to counter such attacks.
