24 November 2024 17:46

The 70th anniversary session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) is being held in Montreal, Canada, from 22 to 25 November.

The event is attended by representatives of 32 member states of the Alliance, as well as delegations of partner states, Caliber.Az reports.

Azerbaijan is represented at the session by the delegation of Milli Majlis (Parliament) and members of the country's permanent mission to NATO.

Within the framework of the committees' meetings, such topics as the war in Ukraine, final decisions taken at the NATO Washington Summit, strengthening the Alliance's defence, the future of NATO partnerships, prospects for cooperation with the Global South and Indo-Pacific regions, security of the Black Sea region, threats from China, security challenges facing NATO, climate change, as well as the application of high technology and artificial intelligence are discussed.

During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation also held meetings with NATO PA Secretary General Ruxandra Popa and Head of the Turkish Grand National Assembly delegation to NATO PA Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

On November 22, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly opened its annual session with an appeal for a strengthened transatlantic Alliance to boost defence and deterrence in a dangerous world.   More than 260 parliamentarians from NATO and partner countries are attending the Assembly’s annual session, including New Zealand, which is sending a delegation for the first time.

Topics on the Assembly’s agenda include challenges from China and NATO security partnerships in Asia; upgrading NATO’s IAMD; ensuring security in the Western Balkans, Black Sea and Arctic regions; countering disinformation; and the military role of artificial intelligence (AI) and other new technologies.
