Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono discussed the peace process with Armenia and prospects for regional cooperation during a meeting in Baku on August 28.
Grono conveyed the greetings of the EU leadership to the head of state and congratulated him on the results achieved in Washington regarding the normalisation of relations with Armenia and the peace agenda. She underlined that the process contributes to ensuring lasting peace in the region and noted that EU member states support the peace achieved between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
She also expressed the EU’s readiness to assist in implementing the agreements reached between the two countries, including the development of transport corridors.
President Aliyev thanked the EU for its support and asked to convey his regards to its leadership. He highlighted the historic significance of the Washington talks, emphasising the role of the United States and noting the importance of the Washington Declaration, the initialling of the peace agreement, and the joint appeal by Baku and Yerevan on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
The meeting also touched upon Azerbaijan’s readiness to build confidence with Armenia on a bilateral basis. Particular attention was paid to establishing unobstructed transport and transit connections between Azerbaijan’s mainland and its Nakhchivan region, with President Aliyev noting the opportunities for cooperation with the EU in modernising Nakhchivan’s transport infrastructure.
The sides further exchanged views on the broader prospects of Azerbaijan–EU cooperation.
