EU's Stano notes necessity of Russia's, China's role in Ukraine peace talks

02 September 2024 17:45

Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has stated that while Russia's participation in any potential peace conference on Ukraine will ultimately be necessary, the decision on when to invite the Russian Federation should not rest with the EU.

At a press conference in Brussels, Stano emphasized that it is not up to the EU to decide who should be involved in such a conference, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

He acknowledged the necessity of Russia’s involvement in future discussions but noted that the timing of such an invitation should be determined by the organizers of the peace talks.

Stano also highlighted the crucial role of China in the peace process, given Beijing's strong relationship with Moscow. He stressed that China’s participation is essential, as the EU hopes Beijing will leverage its influence over Russia to help resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“The EU expects China to use its close ties with Russia to promote a resolution to the conflict,” Stano remarked. His comments underscore the EU's strategic considerations in involving key international players to facilitate a peace settlement.
