Biden, Trump collaborate to end conflict in Lebanon

22 November 2024 22:24

The administration of US President Joe Biden is working in close coordination with the team of President-elect Donald Trump to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Shiite militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Both US teams are working extensively to bring the war in Lebanon to a conclusion, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

US Deputy Assistant to the President, Amos Hochstein, has been deeply involved in the coordination efforts between the two administrations.

The Biden administration, with its focus on securing a diplomatic resolution before the end of its term, is particularly motivated to achieve progress on this issue after facing a series of setbacks in its foreign policy. Trump's inauguration, scheduled for January 20, 2025, has further underscored the urgency of making headway on this matter.

However, Lebanon remains concerned about securing assurances from the US regarding Israel’s commitment to respecting its sovereignty. Israel, on the other hand, is reportedly insisting on retaining the option to act freely against targets in Lebanon should any agreement be violated in the future. Sources suggest that while the talks remain ongoing, the atmosphere remains positive.

Currently, the ceasefire agreement under negotiation includes a truce where Israel will withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah militants will vacate their positions. This plan aims to allow thousands of displaced Israeli citizens to return to their homes in northern Israel, marking a significant step toward regional peace.\
