Finland not to keep US nuclear weapons on its territory

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has said that the authorities do not see the need to keep the US nuclear weapons on Finland’s territory.

“There is no need to keep a nuclear arsenal as NATO itself ensures nuclear deterrence. The nuclear warheads that are already deployed in several NATO member states are sufficient to ensure NATO’s security,” Orpo said in an interview with the Polish Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

“Despite this, Finland is carefully preparing to contain potential threats to the alliance by using conventional weapons,” the prime minister added.

The US keeps its nuclear arsenal in NATO member states as part of the Nuclear Sharing programme.
