IDF uncertain over whether Gaza City offensive to dislodge Hamas
An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) representative has acknowledged that the planned offensive on Gaza City may not succeed in ousting Hamas, even if the city is captured.
Speaking in a closed meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the official said the move would be largely symbolic and estimated that around 800,000 civilians remain in the city, according to public broadcaster Kan, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
Despite the doubts, the IDF is moving forward with preparations for the operation. On September 3, the army announced an increase in the operational and logistical readiness of reservists, who will undergo exercises in both open terrain and urban warfare.
To boost tactical capabilities, new equipment has been deployed, including drones for use by company and platoon commanders. The military has also upgraded its infrastructure with new shooting ranges, air-conditioned living quarters, and improved facilities in anticipation of a large-scale call-up.
Israel’s campaign aims to "gain full control of the Gaza Strip, dismantle Hamas, and rescue the remaining hostages." The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israeli authorities believe 20 hostages are still alive.
Since then, the conflict has exacted a heavy toll on Gaza. According to the territory’s Health Ministry, at least 63,746 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.
