Trump tells Chevron to cut fuel prices, claims credit for oil industry revival

03 August 2026 20:41

US President Donald Trump has urged oil companies to lower retail fuel prices, while claiming his administration was responsible for the industry's recent success.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on August 3, Trump praised Chevron Chairman and Chief Executive Mike Wirth following an interview with Fox Business presenter Maria Bartiromo, but said the executive had failed to acknowledge what he described as the role of the Trump administration in supporting the US oil sector.

Trump argued that, without the "foresight, strength, and stability" of his administration, "the Oil Industry, and our Country itself, would be DEAD!"

He also pointed to Chevron's return to Venezuela, saying the company had previously been forced out of the country but was now back "far bigger and stronger than ever before", adding that it was expected to "make a fortune". Trump said the same applied to other oil companies operating in the region.

The president concluded his post by calling on energy producers to reduce prices for consumers.

"Get your consumer (retail!) Oil Prices DOWN, NOW!" Trump wrote.
