Three lions die at Japanese zoo amid extreme heat

03 August 2026 18:26

Three of the 16 lions at Tama Zoo in the suburbs of Tokyo have died over the past week, with extreme heat believed to be the likely cause, according to the zoo's management.

The zoo closed its lion enclosure on July 23 after several animals required treatment during the ongoing heatwave, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The lions showed symptoms including loss of appetite, fatigue and reduced activity, while some were unable to walk and lost consciousness.

Despite the efforts of veterinarians, three lions died on July 28, July 31 and August 2. Three more lions remain in a serious condition and are unable to walk. Air conditioners and fans are being used to help cool the animals.

The exact cause of death will only be confirmed after post-mortem examinations. However, preliminary findings showed severe dehydration and multiple organ failure, suggesting that overheating was one of the factors contributing to their deaths.

Japan has experienced unusually high temperatures in recent weeks, with temperatures exceeding 40C in some parts of the country. Between July 20 and July 26, more than 18,000 people were admitted to hospital with heatstroke, and 45 of them died.
