Media: Israel, Türkiye maintain common interests despite Gaza crisis
Relations between Israel and Türkiye are experiencing one of the most challenging periods in recent years, but both countries still share important common interests that could pave the way for restoring dialogue.
The two countries have common interests in Syria, Caliber.Az reports, citing Israeli news outlet Israel Hayom.
Israel and Türkiye previously pursued similar strategic objectives in Syria, including countering Iran's influence and combating radical groups. Israeli strikes on pro-Iranian forces weakened the Assad regime, contributing to the successes of Turkish-backed rebels.
However, the crisis, exacerbated by the conflict in Gaza, has strained relations. In the long term, though, both nations remain interested in stabilising the situation in Syria, curbing Iran’s influence, and ensuring security in the Middle East. Economic ties continue to be a crucial stabilising factor despite political disagreements.
Notably, following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Türkiye's response has been notably critical of Israel's military operations in Gaza. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has labeled Israel a "terror state" and compared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler, intensifying anti-Israel sentiment within Türkiye.
In November 2024, Erdoğan announced the severance of all diplomatic relations with Israel, citing Israel's reluctance to end the war in Gaza.
This decision led to the recall of ambassadors and the suspension of trade agreements. Subsequently, Türkiye imposed a trade embargo on Israel, halting all trade activities.
Public opinion in Türkiye has largely supported the government's stance. A survey indicated that 81% of Turks approve of the country's position supporting Palestine, with only 13% disapproving.
Despite these tensions, certain agreements between the two nations remain in place.
