Media: Ocampo maintains contacts with head of pro-Russian separatists in Garabagh

19 August 2023 15:14

The ex-prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno Ocampo, who faced charges of corruption and harassment a few years ago, now maintains contacts with the head of the pro-Russian separatists in Garabagh, Arayik Harutyunyan, Report informs, citing Ukrainian 5th channel.

World media, including EU Today, Digi24, The Washington Times, Focus, Sofiaglobe and many others, studied Ocampo's report and found a clear link with the Armenian pro-Russian separatist.

Ocampo's bias and the incompetence of his assessment are easily explained by the circumstances that accompanied the emergence of this document. On July 29, 'the President' Arayik Harutyunyan asked Ocampo to comment on the situation in Garabagh – this is a fact, EU Today says.

In just nine days the ex-Prosecutor submitted the assignment, EU Today notes, adding that the ex-Prosecutor of the ICC, who had barely closed one case in nine years, was able to figure out the situation in Garabagh in just nine days.

The report of the ex-prosecutor replicates the only propaganda idea that has been repeatedly refuted by the international media since the beginning of the year – the so-called "humanitarian disaster" in Garabagh. The legitimacy of Ocampo's report was completely refuted by Rodney Dixon, a leading lawyer and expert in the field of international law, an adviser to the Temple Garden Chambers law firm.

Armenia, referring to only Ocampo's article, appealed to the UN Security Council on August 11 with a request to convene an emergency meeting on this issue, which, according to the media, is beneficial only to Russia.

"Obviously, neither Harutyunyan nor Pashinyan will benefit from the escalation in the South Caucasus. In fact, the only beneficiary of the commissioned report and the subsequent farcical 'emergency meeting' of the UN Security Council is Russia. The world media have been warning about this since the beginning of the year," Romania's Digi24 reads.

On its part, The Washington Times notes that Russia’s regime is manipulating the Armenian minority in Azerbaijan's Garabagh to stir ethnic conflicts in the South Caucasus and to replace the Armenian government with a Moscow proxy.

"The scenario is reminiscent of other disputes that the Kremlin has manufactured, whether in Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine, to maintain its sphere of imperial influence," the article reads.

"Putin is using Armenian separatist puppets in Garabagh, as he did with Ossetians and Abkhazians in Georgia and supporters of the 'Russian Peace' in Crimea and Donbas," says the largest Ukrainian news site Censor.

Ukraine's another edition, Focus, notes that Ocampo's ties with the separatists began a long time ago. In 2010, Ocampo visited Yerevan in the status of an ICC prosecutor and met with Serzh Sargsyan, who was the President of Armenia at that time. Five years later, Ocampo visited Yerevan again to participate in the forum "Against the Crime of Genocide".
