New Polish government to keep ban on Ukrainian grain import

03 January 2024 10:04

Poland will not lift the ban on importing Ukrainian grain imposed in May 2023, says the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Poland, Czesław Siekierski.

The country is waiting for new rules at the EU level, RBC-Ukraine reports.

"We must support the embargo until the conditions replacing it are agreed upon. I believe that a good solution would be to introduce licensing of transport using transit routes outside of Poland simultaneously," the ministry quotes Siekierski's statement in an interview with TVP Info.

Moreover, according to Polskie Radio 24, the minister also mentioned in the interview that the export of Ukrainian grain should be carried out by a route different from the European or Polish one.

"Because there is always a certain risk even during transit that part of the grain and other agricultural products will stay in Poland," he added.

Ban on the import of Ukrainian grain

Recall that some EU countries introduced a ban on the import of Ukrainian grain in the spring of 2023. This was done due to the significant impact of imports on prices in the domestic markets of the states.

Later, the decision was made at the level of the European Commission for Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. It was valid until September 15.

After that, it was expected that the import ban would be lifted. However, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia decided to extend such measures unilaterally.
