MEP says US actions signal emergence of new world order
Manfred Weber, the leader of the European People's Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament, has stated that a new world order is emerging due to changes in U.S. foreign policy.
He made these comments in an interview with the Berliner Morgenpost, per Caliber.Az.
According to Weber, the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration are undermining the fundamental principles of international relations.
He also expressed doubt about the return of "old America" and noted that Washington is increasingly viewing Europe as an adversary.
"I also fear that old America will not return. We are living in a new world order. Trump sees Europe as opponents — this is exactly what his tariff policy demonstrates," Weber said.
The politician called the imposition of high import tariffs by the U.S. a black day and a major mistake by Trump. He also emphasized that the European Union (EU) will not allow itself to become dependent on the U.S., as it has comparable economic power.
Weber also urged the EU to actively conclude trade agreements with other countries, describing such agreements as anti-Trump. Specifically, he suggested accelerating negotiations with MERCOSUR and India.
"The EU can become a beacon of fair, rules-based trade. The euro could also strengthen as a global currency," Weber added.
