Official: New US base in Poland could cost Warsaw $2.7 billion

A new permanent U.S. military base proposed for Poland would accommodate 5,000 American troops, while the cost of constructing the facility could exceed 10 billion zlotys ($2.7 billion), Polish Deputy Defence Minister Pawel Bejda said.

“As for the permanent base, we are talking about 5,000 troops,” Bejda said in an interview with RMF FM.

A decision on which U.S. forces would be stationed at the facility, as well as whether the project would involve a single base or several installations, would be made at NATO level, Bejda said.

He added that even if the proposal receives approval, establishing the base could take several years. Poland would assume the entire cost of construction, with the bill potentially exceeding 10 billion zlotys ($2.7 billion), according to the deputy defence minister.

The proposal for a new permanent U.S. military presence was formally submitted on June 3, when Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz presented the plan to U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

A Pentagon delegation is visiting Poland from September 10 to 11 to inspect locations proposed by Warsaw as potential sites for the new military base.
