Official: Assailant at Azerbaijani embassy in Iran to be sentenced soon
Yasin Huseynzadeh, who was found guilty of attacking the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran, will be sentenced in the coming days.
Deputy Chairman of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Judiciary for International Affairs, Secretary of the Human Rights Headquarters Kazem Gharibabadi said this, IRNA reports.
To recap, on January 7, 2023, at about 08:30 am Baku time an armed attack was committed on the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The attacker, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, broke through the guard post and killed the head of the security service Orkhan Asgarov. Two embassy security officers, Vasif Tagiyev and Mahir Imanov, were wounded while preventing the attack.
The perpetrator of the attack, Yasin Huseynzadeh, was detained. After the terrorist attack, the activity of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran was suspended.
On January 29, 2023, employees of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran were evacuated from Tehran to Baku. A total of 53 people, including embassy staff and their family members, returned home.
