Ukraine condemns violent dispersal of peaceful protest in Georgia
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has condemned the violent dispersal of a peaceful protest in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Particular disappointment with the Georgian government's decision to suspend negotiations on EU membership until 2028 was expressed, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
"Ukraine condemns the use of force against a peaceful protest in Tbilisi. We urge the authorities to respect the right of Georgian citizens to peaceful protest and to refrain from violence and provocations," the ministry said.
The ministry noted that the escalation of the domestic political situation in the country is a result of numerous violations during the parliamentary elections on October 26.
These violations must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible should be held accountable. At the same time, Kyiv is disappointed by Tbilisi's decision to suspend EU accession negotiations until 2028.
"This decision, like the use of force against a peaceful protest, is a sign of ceasing democratic processes in the country in favour of Moscow. It is no coincidence that Georgia's leadership has already received public praise from the Kremlin for actions that go against the European choice of its own people," the ministry said.
Ukraine urges Georgia to respect the aspirations of the majority of the Georgian people to be part of Europe and to resume the implementation of the reforms necessary for EU membership.
On November 28, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the country does not plan to start negotiations for EU membership and has postponed the process until the end of 2028. The Georgian government has rejected any financial support from the EU.
Kobakhidze described EU grants and loans as a means of exerting pressure on Georgia. Following this statement, protests erupted in Tbilisi, leading to clashes. As security forces attempted to disperse the demonstration, arrests were made, and injuries were reported. Dozens of Georgian diplomats expressed their disagreement with the decision to halt the EU integration process.
