Hungary's Fidesz leader resigns ahead of key constitutional vote
Gergely Gulyás, the head of Hungarian opposition party Fidesz's parliamentary group, has announced his resignation, saying the caucus should be led by a politician who will be eligible to stand in the country's next parliamentary election.
Gulyás made the announcement on July 13 following a joint meeting of the parliamentary groups of Fidesz and its coalition partner, the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP), Telex reports.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the parliamentary session, Gulyás criticized the proposed 17th amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law, describing it as an "unprecedented overreach."
He said he had decided to step down to allow the parliamentary group to be led by a politician who would be eligible to contest the next election.
Hungary's parliament is scheduled to vote on the proposed constitutional amendment later on July 13.
