WP: Canadians shun US products as trade war with Washington deepens

Canadians have begun switching to domestic alternatives to American products in protest against the trade war launched by the United States against their country, The Washington Post (WP) reports.

Across the country, Canadians are making increasing efforts to distance themselves from their southern neighbor, using their travel and purchasing decisions to express dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s trade policies and aggressive rhetoric.

According to the latest data, covering June, the number of trips by Canadians to the United States fell by 25% compared with the same month in 2024. An analysis by the Bank of Canada earlier this year also showed that consumers were seeking to buy fewer American products at grocery stores, describing the trend as “modest but clearly visible.”

“Canadians are feeling bruised by the decisions made by the American government,” added Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC Capital Markets in Toronto. “Where there’s a choice, I think a lot of people are doing it out of a sense of patriotic duty.”
