Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland consider referendum on leaving UK

The leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff on September 14 to discuss self-determination and possible changes to the constitutional status of their regions, according to The Telegraph.

The meeting will be the first joint event of its kind involving the leaders of the three regions. It will be attended by Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald is also expected to take part.

The participants intend to sign a joint declaration providing for cooperation on self-determination and the possibility of a democratic decision on the future of each region.

The Telegraph notes that the meeting demonstrates an unprecedented convergence among political forces seeking significant changes to the UK’s constitutional structure.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously said that a new referendum on Scottish independence could not be held before the next parliamentary election. He also stressed that the government does not support independence and intends to focus on the economy and reducing the cost of living.
