Poland proposes permanent US military base in western part of country
Poland has proposed that the United States establish a permanent military base in the western part of the country as part of efforts to strengthen NATO's presence on its eastern flank.
Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk announced the proposal during an interview with RMF FM radio, saying Warsaw had already submitted an official request to Washington earlier this year.
In early June, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the government had formally proposed the creation of a permanent U.S. military base on Polish territory.
Tomczyk said two potential locations had been identified: the Greater Poland and Lower Silesia regions. However, he noted that no final decision had been made and that another location could still be considered.
According to the deputy minister, Poland favours a site in the country's west to facilitate the deployment of additional NATO forces.
He added that Poland has spent years investing in logistics infrastructure at airports in western regions to prepare for the possible arrival of military assistance from the NATO alliance.
