State Duma official warns Armenia's survival depends on ties with Russia Dismisses Western influence

29 November 2024 22:38

Petr Tolstoy, Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma, stated that Armenia's survival is deeply intertwined with its relationship with Russia, emphasizing that no government, regardless of its orientation, can sever this vital bond.

Speaking at the 2nd Russia-Armenia Public Forum, Tolstoy expressed that Armenia's historical dependence on Russia is evident, and despite the current Armenian leadership's pivot towards the West, the people of Armenia understand the importance of their relationship with Russia, Caliber.Az reports.

"Our century-long history consistently shows that both countries need each other, and that Armenia will not exist without Russia," Tolstoy remarked.

He added that while Armenia's current government may pursue a pro-Western course, it is unlikely to succeed without the support of the Armenian people. Tolstoy highlighted that the people of Armenia have long known who defended them in times of need, and this historical foundation will ensure that any political differences between the governments are temporary.

Tolstoy dismissed Western efforts to influence Armenia, including attempts to sway the youth towards anti-Russian sentiment and promote a European-centric outlook. He expressed confidence that these efforts would not be effective, as history remains on Russia's side.

“We have direct links with all our colleagues from the Armenian parliament," Tolstoy said, reaffirming Russia’s willingness to engage in dialogue. "The change in the Armenian leadership’s course is not our desire. We are ready for dialogue and open to it."

He also suggested that, to improve bilateral relations, Armenia should address what he described as the presence of 2,500 organizations with destructive agendas operating within the country.

According to Tolstoy, the main challenge in Armenia lies in the illusion that cooperation with the West, particularly under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government, could lead to salvation. He concluded by stating that Russia remains committed to strengthening Russian-Armenian ties, despite the political shifts within Armenia.
