Georgia suffers second major blackout in less than two weeks

05 August 2026 21:14

A widespread power outage struck Tbilisi and much of Georgia on August 5 evening, leaving large parts of the country without electricity and disrupting railway operations.

The blackout began at approximately 8:15 p.m. local time. Power was cut across the capital and most regions of the country, though authorities have yet to disclose the cause of the incident, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The outage also affected rail transport, with train services on several routes experiencing disruptions due to the loss of electricity.

No official statement has been issued regarding the reason for the nationwide blackout.

The incident comes less than two weeks after Georgia experienced another major power outage on July 24–25. Preliminary findings suggested that the earlier blackout was triggered by a fault on a high-voltage transmission line in the western Imereti region, compounded by the malfunction of automatic protection systems.
