Pashinyan blames EAEU colleagues for Armenia’s EU pivot

07 August 2026 14:58

The European Union is a significant trade and economic partner for Armenia, but the country’s current priority is not to compare the EU with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), but to create additional alternatives for Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

Pashinyan made the remarks in an interview with Russian journalists on August 7, Caliber.Az reports.

“Some colleagues from the EAEU prompted this process by saying that Armenia is not needed by anyone and that it is not welcome anywhere. We took this signal not negatively, but positively and began working, because in reality the situation is completely different,” Pashinyan said.

He stressed that Armenia’s efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union should be viewed in the context of expanding the country’s economic and political options rather than choosing one bloc over another.

To note, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko previously made a statement questioning “who needs Armenia.”
