Ukrainian-born congressional candidate arrested in Hawaii after knife incident PHOTO

Ukrainian-born US Democratic congressional candidate Kirill Basin was arrested in Hawaii after an alleged knife-related altercation at a beach, resulting in charges of making terroristic threats, police said.

Basin, 40, who is challenging incumbent U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, was arrested on August 1 following an incident at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei on the island of Maui, Caliber.Az reports via Hawaiian media.

According to the Maui Police Department, the confrontation began when a 61-year-old man asked Basin to lower the volume of his music. Police allege Basin responded by threatening the man, implying he had a firearm and would shoot the victim's wife.

Authorities said a bystander intervened, leading to a physical altercation during which Basin allegedly armed himself with a knife, threatened multiple people and then threw the weapon into the ocean. Police later recovered the knife.

Basin has been charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $1 million.

Police said Basin has been arrested in several other incidents involving alleged assault and property damage since May. Several people have also obtained temporary restraining orders against him, including Maui County Council member Thomas Cook, who said he feared for his own safety and that of his staff after Basin disrupted a council meeting in May.

Basin was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and moved to the United States at the age of five. He earned a law degree from New York University, worked as a public defender in Alaska and later became the head of a company based on the island of Maui.
