Georgia urges Russia to withdraw forces on 2008 war anniversary

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia has called on Russia to withdraw its forces from Georgian territory, marking the 18th anniversary of the 2008 war between the two countries.

“In August 2008, Russia, violating fundamental norms and principles of international law, occupied integral parts of Georgia’s territory — Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region — and subsequently recognised them as ‘independent states’," the ministry said in a statement, cited by Caliber.Az.

Tbilisi said that, nearly two decades on, Moscow has yet to fully implement the terms of the ceasefire agreement reached on August 12, 2008, with mediation by the European Union.

“Moreover, Russia is expanding its illegal control over the occupied regions, continuing their militarisation, and actively taking steps towards their de facto annexation,” the ministry said.

The statement also highlighted ongoing concerns over conditions in the territories, citing serious human rights violations, ethnic discrimination against Georgians and the isolation of local populations. It added that restricted access for international organisations hampers independent assessments and limits the protection of human rights.

According to the ministry, Russia’s actions constitute a “gross violation” of international law, a position it said is supported by multiple rulings from international courts in recent years.

Georgia reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, focused on de-occupation, strengthening stability and rebuilding trust between communities divided by the war.

“Georgia uses diplomatic and legal mechanisms to achieve these goals and actively cooperates with international partners,” the statement reads.

The ministry also urged Russia to comply with the ceasefire agreement, withdraw its armed forces, and ensure the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons and refugees.
