President: Azerbaijan, Armenia could reconcile quickly if committed to peace
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed optimism about the prospects for lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, stating that reconciliation could occur in a relatively short period if both sides remain committed.
He made the remarks while speaking at the panel session “Defining Eurasia's Economic Identity” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Caliber.Az reports per state media.
“If there is commitment to peace, then two countries can reconcile in a relatively short period of time,” Aliyev said, highlighting the tangible outcomes of recent diplomatic efforts. He referred to the peace agreement signed in Washington, noting that it is already yielding practical results.
“It is not only 5–6 months of peace in the future, and naturally, we do not deny that as independent countries, we are enjoying this situation,” he added.
The Azerbaijani president stressed the importance of demonstrating the benefits of peace to gain public support. “I think, for both sides (Azerbaijan and Armenia), what is needed is to demonstrate the results of living in peace, so that we can also witness the full support of our societies for this process,” Aliyev said.
He underscored the broader regional significance of a stable and cooperative South Caucasus, noting that the achievements so far have brought substantial benefits. “I am very optimistic, because really what has been achieved is a tremendous benefit to Azerbaijan, to Armenia, and to the South Caucasus,” he emphasized.
