Tension mounts within Armenia's ruling party amid recent attacks

28 March 2024 09:58

A sense of fear and apprehension has gripped the inner circles of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's ruling faction in the wake of recent domestic turmoil in Armenia.

Concerns have escalated among members of the Civil Contract faction following a series of alarming incidents, including bomb explosions near residences and offices of faction members, as well as an armed attack on the Nork police station, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian publication Hraparak.

It sheds light on the prevailing unease within Pashinyan's camp, reporting that these events have sparked widespread fears of potential reprisals and public backlash. A source cited by Hraparak highlights the palpable anxiety among ruling party members, suggesting that the recent attacks have shattered any semblance of tranquillity within their ranks.

"In particular, bomb explosions near the homes and offices of members of the Civil Contract faction, as well as an armed attack on the Nork police station, aroused fear among members of the ruling team that they might be subject to severe public condemnation," the publication notes.

The apprehension among Pashinyan's associates has significantly altered the dynamics within the ruling party, with closed-door discussions no longer characterized by a sense of calmness and submission. In a startling turn of events, some Members of Parliament have reportedly found the courage to voice dissent against Pashinyan's contentious decisions, signalling a potential fracture within the once-unified faction.

"According to our source, this is also the reason why closed discussions of the ruling party no longer take place in a calm and submissive atmosphere, and some MPs even dare to speak out against Pashinyan’s controversial decisions," Hraparak reports.
